On September 15, 1600, the decisive "battle for the realm" was fought at Sekigahara between Tokugawa Ieyasu's Eastern Army and Ishida Mitsunari's Western Army, each numbering around 80,000. The defection of Kobayakawa Hideaki proved decisive, and the Eastern Army won in half a day. This battle paved the way for Ieyasu's appointment as shogun in 1603 and the founding of the Edo shogunate.
