One of the six temples forming the Roku-Amida pilgrimage circuit established by the monk Kuya (Koya Shonin), who placed Amida Buddha images at six locations in Kyoto in the Heian period. Kuya, known as the \'Saint of the Markets,\' was a pioneer of Pure Land Buddhism among the common people. The Amida Nyorai image is said to have been carved by Kuya himself.
