Tenjinja Shrine in Ota was founded in the early Kamakura period by enshrining Sugawara no Michizane to promote learning in the Nitta estate. Legend holds that Nitta Yoshisada prayed here for both scholarship and military fortune before his 1333 campaign against Kamakura. Plum trees fill the grounds in his memory, and a spring plum festival is held annually. Students and engineers alike still visit to pray for academic and professional success.
