Kanayama Castle was constructed in 1469 by Iwamatu Ieyoshi, a local warlord of Kozuke Province, atop Mt. Kanayama, a site historically associated with the Nitta clan. When Hideyoshi's 1590 Odawara Campaign forced the Hojo clan to surrender, Kanayama Castle—which had come under Hojo control—was abandoned. Long celebrated as one of Kanto's most impregnable mountain fortresses throughout the Sengoku period, it ended its role as a stronghold with Hideyoshi's unification of Japan. Today its stone walls and moats survive as testimony to that era.
