Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined as the principal deity of Okegawa Tenmangu. After his death at Dazaifu in 903, Michizane—celebrated Heian scholar and statesman—came to be venerated as Tenjin, god of learning, at shrines across Japan. Founded in 1680 in the Nakasendo post town of Okegawa, this shrine has long served as a guardian of learning for the local community.
