Sugawara no Michizane, who died at Dazaifu in 903 and was later deified as the God of Learning, is enshrined here. Kitamoto Tenman-jinja was reportedly founded around 1650, enshrining his spirit as a guardian of scholarship in the farming community of Kitamoto. Plum trees—beloved by Michizane—grow on the grounds, and students offer votive plaques seeking success in their studies each exam season.
