For his role in taking Odani Castle, Hideyoshi was awarded northern Omi by Nobunaga. He abandoned Odani and built Nagahama Castle on Lake Biwa in 1573 — his very first castle as a daimyo. Nagahama marked Hideyoshi's debut as a castle lord.

In 1573, Nobunaga besieged Odani Castle where his brother-in-law Asai Nagamasa was entrenched. After three years since the Battle of Anegawa, he launched a final assault, destroying the Asai clan. His sister Oichi and three daughters were rescued, but Nagamasa and his father took their own lives.

Asai Nagamasa made Odani Castle, built by his ancestors, his stronghold and consolidated control over northern Omi. In 1567 he married Oda Nobunaga's sister Oichi, forming an alliance, but broke with Nobunaga in 1570. For three years he resisted alongside the Asakura clan before taking his own life in September 1573, at the age of twenty-eight. He is remembered as a tragic warrior who prized honour above all.
