Minamoto no Yoritomo

In the sixth month of 1190, Minamoto no Yoritomo granted shrine lands to this tutelary shrine of the Nakamura district. The Nakamura party — Nakamura Munehira and his son Doi Sanehira among them — was an influential band of Sagami warriors who backed Yoritomo's uprising, and his endowment of their home district's shrine reflects the bond between Yoritomo and the Sagami warriors who upheld the Kamakura shogunate.

In 1339, Ashikaga Takauji, founder of the Muromachi shogunate, issued this shrine a letter of authority. Granted amid the turmoil of the Northern and Southern Courts, it placed this venerable tutelary shrine of Sagami under his protection, showing how warrior veneration of the shrine — begun under Minamoto no Yoritomo — carried on into the Muromachi period.
