Cemetery where 2,023 Satsuma Army soldiers killed in the 1877 Seinan War are buried, with Saigo Takamori's grave at center. Located on a Kagoshima hillside with views of Sakurajima. Key figures including Kirino Toshiaki rest alongside Saigo. The Nanshu Shrine within the grounds enshrines Saigo as a deity. Nanshu Bochi (South Island Cemetery) was established following the conclusion of the Satsuma Rebellion (Seinan War) of 1877 (Meiji 10), to inter the fallen soldiers of the Satsuma army. Saigo Takamori (1828-1877), the great Meiji Restoration hero, endured two island exiles totaling six years. After his lord Shimazu Nariakira's death and a failed double-suicide with the monk Gessho, he was secretly exiled to Amami Oshima (1859-62), where he married Aikana, then to Okinoerabu Island (1862-64) where he was confined in an open-air cell.
