Ruins of a Sengoku-period sea castle in Nishiura, Numazu. Built along the coast facing Suruga Bay as a naval base, it was an important maritime stronghold contested by the Takeda, Hojo, and Imagawa clans. Imagawa Yoshimoto commanded a navy that dominated Suruga Bay, and the area around Nagahama Castle fell within Imagawa naval range. After Yoshimoto was killed at Okehazama and the Imagawa declined, this maritime stronghold became a prize contested by the Takeda and Hojo. The legacy of Yoshimoto's sea control invited the subsequent Sengoku struggle.
