Also known as Senjokaku (Thousand-Tatami Hall), this great Buddhist lecture pavilion was commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587 to memorialize war dead through monthly sutra readings. Left unfinished at his death, it preserves an unwalled open structure of 857-tatami-mat interior, designated an Important Cultural Property. Adjacent to the iconic Five-story Pagoda.
In 1587 (Tenshō 15), Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the monk Ankokuji Ekei to begin construction of a great Buddhist lecture hall on Miyajima to pray for the souls of soldiers killed in battle.
