概要
Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, Hiroshima, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its torii gate appearing to float on the sea. Its three Munakata goddesses have been venerated as sea guardians since 593. Developed by Taira no Kiyomori, the view at high tide is one of Japan's Three Views. The 16-meter torii can be approached on foot at low tide.

厳島の戦い
1555年10月、安芸国厳島（現在の広島県廿日市市宮島）で毛利元就が大内氏の実権を握った陶晴賢を奇襲して滅ぼした合戦。陶晴賢は二万余の大軍で厳島に渡ったが、毛利元就は約四千の兵で嵐の夜を利用した奇襲作戦を敢行。厳島神社を擁する宮島の複雑な地形を熟知した元就軍が四方から包囲し、陶晴賢は敗れて自害した。「日本三大奇襲」の一つとして名高いこの合戦で毛利氏は中国地方の覇者への道を開いた。元就の緻密な計略と胆力が際立つ戦国史上屈指の奇襲戦として高く評価されている。

In 1555, Mori Motonari staged the Battle of Itsukushima on this very island, luring Sue Harukata into a trap and annihilating his force. Motonari drew the 5,000-strong Mori army onto the island fortress, then launched a surprise amphibious assault through a storm to destroy the 20,000-strong Sue army. Counted among Japan's three great surprise attacks, this victory was the turning point that made the Mori clan masters of the Chugoku region.
