On December 20, 1590, Satake Yoshishige, 18th head of the Satake clan, attacked and captured Mito Castle from its lord, Edo Shigemichi, who had failed to join the Odawara Campaign. Shigemichi fled to the Yuki clan, his wife's family, and the Satake used this victory to move their base from Ota Castle to Mito, consolidating their control over Hitachi Province.
