A branch temple of the Otani-ha sect of Jodo Shinshu in Kyutaromachi, Chuo Ward, Osaka. When Matsuo Basho, the great haiku poet, died in Osaka on October 12, 1694, at the home of Hanaya Nizaemon, his body was temporarily interred in the Minami-Mido precinct before being moved to Gichuji in Otsu, Shiga — a stone monument marking the site of Basho's death stands in the grounds.
