Construction began in 1597 by Ikoma Chikamasa. Temporarily abandoned under the One Castle decree, it was rebuilt in 1641 by Yamazaki Ieharu, then governed by the Kyogoku clan until the Meiji Restoration. In addition to his main seat at Takamatsu, Ikoma Chikamasa began construction of a satellite castle at Marugame's Kameyama hill in 1597, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. It took about six years to reach nearly its present form. The foundations of what would become famed for its towering stone walls trace back to Chikamasa's original building plan.
