A water castle at the mouth of the Ibi, Nagara, and Kiso rivers, guarding the strategic eastern entrance to Ise Bay. In 1601 Honda Tadakatsu, one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa, became first lord of Kuwana and extensively rebuilt it. Today the stone walls and part of the moats remain as Kyuka Park, renowned for cherries, wisteria, and iris.
The site of Kuwana Castle has ancient roots, and during the medieval period it served as a strategic stronghold under the Seki clan.
