Minamoto no Yoritomo
First Shogun of Kamakura
Minamoto no Yoritomo is said to have prayed at this ichinomiya of Izumo Province for martial fortune and the prosperity of the Minamoto clan. Izumo devotion held an important position in the religious policy of the Kamakura shogunate, and Yoritomo and the Hojo continued offerings to Kumano Taisha and Izumo Taisha (Kizuki Taisha). As the core of warrior devotion in medieval Izumo, the shrine attracted the reverence of provincial samurai as well.
