概要
Izumo Taisha, located in Izumo City of Shimane Prefecture, is one of Japan's most ancient shrines. The origin of Izumo Taisha lies in the myth of 'Kunitsukami' — the divine transfer of the land. As compensation for Okuninushi's yielding of the Central Land of the Reed Plains to the envoys of Amaterasu (paving the way for the imperial line's descent), a magnificent palace was built — this became Izumo Taisha. The relationship between Amaterasu, ancestral deity of the imperial family, and Okuninushi forms the foundation of Japanese mythology, and successive emperors from Jinmu onward held this site in deep reverence.
