A Shingon-shu Buzan-ha temple in Koriyama, founded in 807 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro during his campaigns against the Emishi. With over 1,200 years of history, the temple houses an Eleven-faced Kannon as a hidden image and serves as the 16th station of the Oshu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. An Important Art Object bronze bell from the Kamakura period is preserved here.
The origins of Nyohoji Temple are traditionally traced to 807, when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, Sei-i Taishogun (Shogun for Subduing the East), is said to have established a hall here during his campaigns against the Emishi people.
