Hijikata Toshizo

In 1862, Aizu lord Matsudaira Katamori, appointed Kyoto's military governor, made Konkai-komyoji his headquarters. The next year, Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo—among the roving warriors who came to Kyoto—stayed under Katamori's command and formed what became the Shinsengumi, with Hijikata later its vice-commander, making this temple regarded as the group's birthplace.
