Founded in 947 to appease the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, who was exiled to Dazaifu in 901. After his death, disasters in Kyoto led to his deification as Tenjin (Thunder God). Kitano Tenmangu Baika-sai (Plum Blossom Festival)
The Plum Blossom Festival held on February 25, the anniversary of Sugawara no Michizane's death. A tea ceremony hosted by geiko and maiko from Kamishichiken is held amid about 1,500 blooming plum trees, creating a refined Japanese atmosphere.

Grounds open 7:00 AM–5:00 PM. Prayer (kitō) reception 9:00 AM–4:00 PM; amulet/charm office 9:00 AM–4:30 PM.
Admission
Free to enter the shrine grounds. The Treasure Hall (Hōmotsuden) charges around ¥1,000 during special seasonal openings.
