Overview
Kirishima Jingu, southern Kyushu's greatest shrine, enshrines Ninigi-no-Mikoto of the Divine Descent myth. Its 21 structures were designated a National Treasure in 2022 for Edo-period vermilion splendor. Revered by the imperial family and famous as the site of Sakamoto Ryoma's honeymoon.

Kirishima Jingu is traditionally said to have been founded in the 6th century, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei, with the original shrine established near the summit of Mount Takachiho-no-mine.
