The site where Home Minister Okubo Toshimichi was assassinated by six discontented samurai on May 14, 1878. On May 14, 1878, Okubo was ambushed at Kioi-zaka by six assassins while on his way to work in his carriage and was killed. Assassin Shimada Ichiro and his associates were motivated by revenge for Saigo's death in the Satsuma Rebellion. With Okubo's death, all three great heroes of the Meiji Restoration had left this world, and early Meiji politics faced a major turning point.
