This shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the Heian-era scholar-statesman who rose to Minister of the Right before being exiled to Dazaifu by rivals and dying there in 903. After his death, the court deified him as "Tenman Daijizai Tenjin," sparking a nationwide spread of Tenjin faith. The shrine was founded around 1400, and records show Edo-period merchants of the Mizonokuchi post town came here to pray for prosperity.
