Kajigaya Tenmangu was founded in the mid-15th century and enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as the deity of learning and the arts. After his death in 903 following exile to Dazaifu, Michizane was venerated as Tenjin-sama across Japan, and his spirit was invited to this hillside shrine. The plum trees in the grounds evoke his farewell poem, composed as he left Kyoto for exile.
