In 1546 Hojo Ujiyasu's 8,000 night-attacked 80,000 — site of one of the three great surprise attacks of the Sengoku era
The Battle of Kawagoe (1546) was a decisive Sengoku-era engagement fought near present-day Kawagoe. Hojo Ujiyasu launched a surprise night attack with only 8,000 soldiers against a coalition of 80,000 led by Uesugi Norimasa, Uesugi Tomosada, and Koga Kubo Ashikaga Harauji — and won a stunning victory. This triumph secured the Hojo clan's dominance in Kanto and fatally weakened both Uesugi houses. …
The Battle of Kawagoe established Hojo dominance over Kanto. After this great victory, the Uesugi power rapidly declined and the Hojo advance across Kanto accelerated. Kenshin's subsequent campaigns into Kanto were a direct response to this Hojo supremacy.
