Overview
A park developed from Nihonmatsu Castle ruins, selected among Japan's top 100 urban parks, top 100 cherry sites, and top 100 castles. Home to 4,500 cherry trees in spring and the famed Nihonmatsu Kiku Ningyo Chrysanthemum Doll Festival in autumn — one of Japan's three great chrysanthemum festivals drawing 250,000 visitors.
Origins
Kasumigajo Park was established on the ruins of Nihonmatsu Castle. The castle is said to have been built around 1414 by Hatakeyama Mitsuyasu during the Nanbokucho period, and served as the stronghold of the Oshu Hatakeyama clan for generations. Nihonmatsu Castle served as the base of the Hatakeyama clan, but during the Sengoku period it became a battleground in conflicts with the Date clan and was captured by Date Masamune in 1586, marking a key step in his expansion across Mutsu province. That struggle is still remembered today at the castle ruins within Kasumigajo Park.
