Kanshinji in Kawachinagano was founded in 701 by En no Gyoja and revived by Kukai in 815. The temple where Kusunoki Masashige studied also served as a Southern Court base. Its secret Seven-Star Nyoirin Kannon is a masterwork of Kukai's esoteric Buddhism.

Masashige is said to have studied esoteric Buddhism, scholarship, and martial arts at Kanshinji from his youth, laying the foundations of his strategic brilliance. The Kusunoki family crest — the kikusui, a chrysanthemum floating on water — is said to derive from the Hokushin (Big Dipper) worship that Kukai consecrated here. After Masashige fell at Minatogawa, his severed head was brought to Kanshinji and buried in a grave mound (kubizuka) on the temple grounds. Emperor Go-Murakami later established his Southern Court palace here, making it a spiritual base of the cause Masashige had died to uphold.
