Ruins of the castle of Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, founder of the Shinkage-ryu school of swordsmanship. Nobutsuna was lord of this castle, but after the fall of his masters the Nagano clan, he set out on a journey of sword training. Known as the Sword Saint, he championed the philosophy of the life-giving sword and invented the fukuro-shinai padded practice sword.

Kamiizumi Castle is said to have been constructed around 1500 by the Kamiizumi clan, a kokujin (local lord) of Kozuke Province, present-day Gunma Prefecture.
