The site on which Jojakko-ji stands is traditionally identified as the location of Fujiwara no Teika's Shigure-tei (Drizzle Pavilion) villa on Mt. Ogura. Teika (1162-1241), the pre-eminent poet and calligrapher of the Kamakura period, is said to have compiled the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu anthology here — selecting 100 poems to write on colored paper (shikishi) for the paper-backing of a folding screen for a court noble. One of Teika's best-known poems, 'Kinu hito wo / Matsuho no ura no / yûnagi ni / yaku ya moshio no / mi mo kogare tsutsu' (Hyakunin Isshu no. 97), exemplifies the lyricism that made him the foremost poet of his age. Jojakko-ji continues to attract devotees of waka poetry from across Japan.
