Kenshin is said to have trained in Zen at Joanji before entering Tochio Castle. His years in Tochio correspond to the formative period in which his personal philosophy of fighting for '義' (righteousness) rather than personal gain took shape. The Zen training he received here is remembered as the spiritual foundation for the principled conduct that made him one of the most admired figures of the Sengoku era.
