Jisonin was founded in 816 by Kobo Daishi Kukai as the administrative office for Koyasan when women were forbidden from the mountain. His mother Tamayori Gozen stayed here, and after her death was venerated as the Miroku Bodhisattva. Known as the Women's Koya, it starts the Choishi-michi pilgrimage path and is a UNESCO World Heritage component.
