Isawa Castle Site is the early 9th-century fortress built in 802 by the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro as the advance base of the imperial court in northeastern Japan. A National Historic Site, it is where the Emishi leader Aterui surrendered, and excavations have revealed government halls and administrative compounds of the ancient Tohoku frontier.
