In 1189, Yoritomo's Oshu Conquest destroyed the Oshu Fujiwara clan, and Muryokoin—built by Hidehira, the third Fujiwara lord, modeled after Byodoin in Uji—rapidly fell into ruin along with Hiraizumi's other temples. Yoritomo's campaign brought an end to Hiraizumi's era as a flourishing center of Pure Land Buddhist culture.
