Overview
Muryokoin Site is a component of the Hiraizumi World Heritage registration. Fujiwara no Hidehira built the temple modeling it on Kyoto's Byodoin Phoenix Hall, reportedly on an even larger scale. The Pure Land garden is arranged so that the setting sun aligns with the western paradise.
Origins
Muryokoin Temple is said to have been established in the 1160s by Fujiwara no Hidehira, the third head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan.
