When Ieyasu's mother Odai-no-kata died in 1602, Ieyasu rebuilt this temple grandly out of deep filial piety and renamed it after her posthumous name "Denzuin-dono." His granddaughter Senhime is also buried here. As one of the "Three Great Jodo Temples of Edo" alongside Zojo-ji and Reigan-ji, it enjoyed strong Tokugawa patronage.
