In 1572 (Genki 3), during his westward campaign to overthrow Tokugawa Ieyasu, Takeda Shingen is said to have prayed for victory at Gansui-ji before the Battle of Mikatagahara. Tradition holds that Shingen sought the protection of the temple's principal Yakushi Nyorai, known as a guardian deity of childbirth and safe delivery, ahead of the decisive battle.
