Overview
Domyoji Temple (founded 594) marks where Sugawara no Michizane paused on his way to exile at Dazaifu. The Eleven-faced Kannon (National Treasure), an early Heian camphorwood masterpiece, opens only a few times yearly. It is also the birthplace of domyoji-ko rice flour.
Origins
Founded in 594 by Hajibe no Yashima as a clan temple. Sugawara no Michizane visited here to bid farewell to his aunt, the nun Kakujuni, on his way to exile at Dazaifu.
