When Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu in 901, he stopped at Domyoji on his journey west to bid a heartfelt farewell to his aunt, the nun Kakujuni. The temple was originally the clan temple of the Sugawara (Tōji) family, making it a place of deep personal significance. A stone monument inscribed with the poem he composed at their parting still stands in the grounds today.
