A Tendai-affiliated temple founded in 971 by Fujiwara no Fuminori with the monk Shinkaku as founding abbot, once a major branch temple of Onjo-ji (Miidera). Long venerated in Iwakura as a sacred place for treating mental illness, it is considered the origin of the "Iwakura hospital." Burned in Oda Nobunaga's assault on Mt.
