Tendai sect temple on Gyoninzaka slope in Meguro, famous for its 500 Rakan stone statues erected to memorialize victims of the devastating Gyoninzaka Fire of 1772, one of the three great fires of Edo. The Shaka Sanzon statue is an Important Cultural Property. A powerful spiritual site minutes from Meguro Station.
Founded in 1624 by the ascetic Daikai from Mount Yudonosan. The temple was the origin point of the Great Gyoninzaka Fire of 1772 which destroyed much of Edo. Rebuilding was long prohibited, and the 500 Rakan statues were later erected to console the fire victims.
