Hideyoshi deeply venerated Chikubushima and visited by boat in 1588 to worship the goddess. The Karamon gate (National Treasure), said to have been relocated from his Fushimi or Osaka Castle, still adorns the island as a masterpiece of Momoyama architecture. For Hideyoshi, Chikubushima was a sacred site symbolizing divine sanction for his rule over Lake Biwa and Japan.

Nobunaga is also said to have visited Chikubushima. During the Sengoku period, control of Lake Biwa was essential for dominating the Kinai region, and the island was a sacred symbol venerated by warlords. Nobunaga's reverence for the Benzaiten helped demonstrate the legitimacy of his control over Omi.
