An ancient Rinzai Nanzenji temple in Chichibu, one of the pilgrimage temples on the Chichibu 34 Kannon circuit. Enshrining Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu, the solemn grounds nestled in the mountains of the Chichibu basin welcome pilgrims. Founded in the Muromachi period, it has nurtured a unique religious culture blending Chichibu mountain worship and Kannon devotion.
Hoonji Temple is said to have been founded in 1275 (the first year of Kenji), and is counted among the pilgrimage temples of the Chichibu 34 Kannon circuit.
