According to tradition, Minamoto no Yoritomo visited Obara Shrine during his pilgrimage to Mt. Oyama. The shrine, dedicated to Oyamatsumi no Mikoto and Yamato Takeru, stands on the mountain's southern slopes and has been a center of mountain worship since antiquity. Yoritomo, who revered eastern Japan's sacred sites from his base in Kamakura, is said to have stopped here along the route.
