Tenneiji is a Soto Zen temple in Aizuwakamatsu known as the ancestral temple of the Ashina clan, who ruled Aizu during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. The clan was destroyed by Date Masamune at the Battle of Suriagehara in 1589, and the temple continues memorial services for the extinct clan. Stone monuments and grave markers of successive lords are preserved on the grounds.
