As the chief tutelary shrine of Sakai — which prospered as an autonomous city from medieval through early modern times — Aguchi Jinja was the spiritual anchor for Sakai's tea masters and merchants, including Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591). Born and raised in Sakai, Rikyu refined the wabi-cha aesthetic within the merchant culture of the autonomous city. Affectionately called "Otera-san," the shrine remains a witness to the spiritual world of Rikyu's Sakai.
