What Deities Govern Marriage Ties? Okuninushi and Sukunahikona
Okuninushi-no-Mikoto (Great Land Master) is Japan’s supreme deity of marriage and all human connections — not only romantic love, but also career bonds, family ties, health, and fortune. Enshrined at Izumo Taisha in Shimane Prefecture, he is popularly known as Daikoku-sama. His divine companion, Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, shared the task of building the nation and is revered for wisdom, medicine, and the forging of partnerships.
Why Izumo Taisha is the Headquarters of All Connections
Every year in the old lunar tenth month (called Kannazuki — “Month Without Gods” nationwide, but Kamiari-zuki — “Month With Gods” in Izumo), the deities of all Japan gather at Izumo Taisha to deliberate the fates and relationships of the coming year. This “divine conference” legend is the mythological basis for Izumo’s supreme status in marriage blessings.

Pilgrimage Guide
Omiwa Jinja in Nara is one of Japan’s oldest shrines, enshrining the deity in the mountain itself — no main hall, just a sacred peak. Suitengu Shrine in Tokyo combines marriage and safe-birth blessings. Taga Taisha enshrines the primal couple Izanagi and Izanami, the model for all marriage. Hakusan Jinja networks across 3,000 shrines for everyday marriage prayers. Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto adds the blessing of agricultural and community ties.
Worship Practices
At Izumo Taisha, use two bows, four claps, one bow (not the usual two claps)
At Omiwa Jinja, worship at the haiden (hall of worship) — the mountain itself is the deity, so there is no inner sanctuary
Pray specifically: rather than “please bring me love,” articulate the qualities of the connection you seek
Give thanks for existing bonds before asking for new ones
FAQ
Is Okuninushi only for romantic prayers?
No. “En” (縁, connection) encompasses career, family, health, and fortune as well as romance. Many visitors pray for business partnerships, job opportunities, or health ties.
What is the difference between Izumo Taisha and Omiwa Jinja for marriage prayers?
Both enshrine aspects of Okuninushi, but Izumo Taisha is the grand headquarters drawing pilgrims from all over Japan, while Omiwa Jinja is considered the ancient origin shrine (the deity in the mountain) for more intimate, primal connection with the god.
