Okamura Tenmangu, a Shinto shrine with over 800 years of history, stands quietly in the residential streets of Isogo Ward, Yokohama. Dedicated to the scholar deity Sugawara no Michizane, it is also a celebrated plum blossom site every February and March. Today the shrine holds another identity: it is the sacred ground of folk duo Yuzu, drawing fans from across Japan who make pilgrimage here.

800 Years of History — The Origins of Okamura Tenmangu

A Kamakura Warrior’s Act of Faith

The shrine was founded around 1190 during the Kenkyu era of the Kamakura period. A retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo who settled in Okamura village traveled all the way to Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto to obtain a branch spirit of Sugawara no Michizane and enshrine it here.

The three enshrined deities are Amaterasu Omikami, Sugawara no Michizane (patron of learning and culture), and Ichikishimahime no Mikoto (Benzaiten, goddess of arts and fortune). The nickname Iro Tenjin (“Colorful Tenjin”) arose from the Meiji era, when geisha and those in the entertainment world frequently prayed here for mastery of the arts.

Why Tenmangu Shrines Plant Plum Trees

Michizane loved plum blossoms deeply. Before his exile to Dazaifu, he composed the poem: “When the east wind blows, send your fragrance, oh plum flowers — even without your master, do not forget the spring.” The legend that the plum tree flew overnight to Dazaifu is told throughout Japan. In tribute, Okamura Tenmangu’s precinct is planted with dozens of plum trees that bloom in red and white from mid-February through early March.

Yuzu’s Sacred Ground — How the Mural Came to the Shrine

From Yokohama Matsuzakaya to the Shrine Precinct

When the iconic department store Yokohama Matsuzakaya closed in 2008, a large mural of Yuzu that had hung on its rooftop faced an uncertain fate. Fans worried it would be lost. Chief priest Suginohara Nobumoto heard of their concern and acted the very next day after closing — he retrieved the mural, cleared space by removing trees, raised funds for a proper frame, and enshrined the painting within the precinct.

Iwasawa Koujii and the Shrine Kindergarten

Yuzu member Iwasawa Koujii attended the Okamura Kindergarten located within the shrine precincts. His former teacher recalls: “He was a quiet child, but always smiling.” Yuzu’s 2003 song “Smile Ondo” became the standard bon-dance song at the shrine’s grand festival (August 24–25), and Kitagawa Yuujin reportedly watched the children’s first performance with his family.

How do I get to Okamura Tenmangu?

Take the Yokohama Subway Blue Line or Keikyu Line to Gumyoji Station, then walk about 15 minutes. Address: 2-13-11 Okamura, Isogo-ku, Yokohama. Small parking lot available in the precinct.

When is the best time to see the plum blossoms?

Mid-February to early March is typically the peak. Early-blooming varieties may open from late January. The shrine precinct and adjacent Okamura Park plum grove together form one of Isogo Ward’s finest plum viewing spots.

Where is the Yuzu mural?

The mural is displayed within the shrine precinct. It was rescued from the rooftop of Yokohama Matsuzakaya when the department store closed in 2008, and the chief priest had it relocated here after hearing of fans’ concerns.
