In 1333 Nitta Yoshisada, responding to Emperor Go-Daigo’s call to topple the Kamakura Shogunate, led a flanking assault around the cliffs at Inamuragasaki at low tide. Kamakura fell, Hojo Takatoki committed suicide at Toshoji temple, and the 150-year shogunate ended. The legend says Yoshisada threw his golden sword into the sea and the waves parted.
