Nitta Yoshishige, ancestor of Yoshisada, chose not to join Yoritomo’s 1180 uprising — a decision that left the Nitta clan marginalized within the Kamakura shogunate for 150 years. Yet the clan survived as a proud minor branch of the Minamoto, and in 1333 Yoshishige’s descendant Yoshisada destroyed the very shogunate that had sidelined his family.
