The Nio (guardian) statues of Todaiji’s South Gate (1203) were completed in 69 days by Unkei, Kaikei, and over ten sculptors using the yosegi (assembled wood) technique — multiple craftsmen working on separate components simultaneously. When recovered in 2009, the statues were found to contain miniature Buddhas, crystals, and Sanskrit seed syllables placed inside to give them spiritual power.
