Ishigakiyama Ichiya-jo: Hideyoshi's 80-Day Stone Citadel
Built in just over 80 days during Hideyoshi's 1590 siege of Odawara, Ishigakiyama was the first full stone-walled castle in eastern Japan. Hideyoshi's headquarters where he met Date Masamune, hosted Sen no Rikyu's tea ceremony, and ended the warring states era.
Ishigakiyama Castle, also called Ichiya-jo (One-Night Castle), was built in just over 80 days during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s 1590 siege of Odawara Castle. It was the first full stone-walled castle in eastern Japan, marking the introduction of Kinai stone-construction techniques to the region. The castle served as Hideyoshi’s headquarters; here he met Date Masamune, hosted tea ceremonies by Sen no Rikyu, and decided the post-war disposition of eastern Japan. The keep ruins offer panoramic views of Odawara, Sagami Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and Hakone.
